<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which saves space, is inexpensive and can prevent deterioration or deformation in an engagement section (intermediate transfer belt) with respective roller caused by that rotation of the intermediate transfer belt is stopped for a long period of time as well as reduce deterioration in the intermediate transfer belt and a primary transfer roller. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided with a mechanism 2 and a power section 28 for driving the mechanism 2. The mechanism 2 independently advances and retreats a contact/separation rod 1 which brings or separates a primary transfer roller m20 into contact with or from an intermediate transfer belt m17 by advancing/retreating movements and a tension roller m14 which makes the intermediate roller m17 tense or slack by advancing/retreating movements.
