PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tenter capable of easily detecting tension acting on a web and a web extension method. SOLUTION: In the tenter, an endless chain 41 mounted with a pin plate 43 is supported by a guide rail 46. The guide rail 46 is composed of an upper divided rail 47, a lower divided rail 47b, and a rail connection part 48. The upper divided rail 47a is mounted to an upper movable carriage 57. The lower divided rail 47b is mounted to a lower movable carriage 58. A movable bracket 64 is mounted with a compression sensor 71 for detecting compression force between itself and the respective movable carriages 57, 58. A tension detecting part 72 detects a value of the tension acting on a wet film 25 based on the detected value of the compression force. A control part 73 displays the detected tension value on a monitor 74 and determines whether the detected tension value is within a standard range or not. If the control part 73 determines the value is not within the standard range, it generates alarm sound indicating abnormality of the tension from an alarm 75 to inform that the tension abnormality is occurring.
