The brake unit has brake caliper elements (13a, 13b) pairwisely arranged opposite to each other and comprising corresponding brake linings (15a, 15b) pressed against a brake disc (7) under spring force. The elements are attached to control valves (22a, 23a, 22b, 23b) e.g. proportional control valves, in hydraulic lines (22, 23), which run parallel to each other. A directional valve (26) is arranged in a connecting line (25), which connects the hydraulic lines. Programmable logic controllers (SPS1, SPS2) control the control valves lying diagonal to each other in the hydraulic lines.
