A piston (2) is movable in a cylinder (3), between a top dead center position and a bottom dead center position, and equipped with at least a piston ring (21, 22) sliding against an internal surface (31) of the cylinder. The cylinder (3) is provided with a layer (6) of heat insulating material near the cylinder head (4). The ring (21, 22) is kept away from this layer (6) when the piston (2) is in its top dead center position. Fuel injection (F₂) within the cylinder starts when the piston (2) is in its upward movement (F₁) from its bottom dead center position to its top dead center position and the injected fuel (F₂) is directed, upon injection, towards the heat insulating material layer (6).
