PURPOSE: A method for manufacturing a carbapenem synthetic intermediate is provided to produce a synthetic intermediate of penem or carbapenem without producing an unstable intermediate. CONSTITUTION: A method for manufacturing a carbapenem synthetic intermediate comprises a step of reacting malonic acid mono-4-nitrobenzyl ester magnesium salt (Mg(O2CCH2CO2PNB)2) with a compound of the chemical formula 2. The carbapenem synthetic intermediate is denoted by the chemical formula 1. In the chemical formulas 1 and 2, R is hydrogen or hydroxyl protecting group. The hydroxyl protecting group is t-butylmethylsilyl.
