1351187 Separation of water from an aqueous solution MONSANTO CO 15 June 1971 [16 June 1970] 27990/71 Heading B1X Water is separated from a liquid or gaseous feed mixture by contact with one side of a water permeable, nitrogen containing organic polymer membrane containing at least one anionic group and optional cationic groups. The other side of the membrane is in contact with a vapour phase, perferably flowing, which has a lower chemical potential than the feed mixture. The membranes may be discs sheets hollow tubes or fibres and may be multilayered and pretreated with heat or hydrochloric acid. The membranes may be prepared by copolymerising acrylonitrile and sodium styrene, sulphonate in the presence of a sulphuric acidferrous ammonium sulphate hexahydrate-water catalyst. Potassium persulphate and sodium meta-bisulphite are also added and the pH adjusted with sodium carbonate. |
