The plate 27 is pivoted about its upper edge and is swung between positions 30, 31 by a ram 29 in synchronism with the vertical movements of the bucket. Fig. 3b shows an embodiment in which two buckets 32, 33 feed material into a sliding hopper 35, the movements of which are synchronized with those of the buckets. Various ways of supporting the gantry are illustrated including the use of floating structures at either one or both ends. The beam supporting the bucket or buckets may be movable up and down inclined planes, Figs. 5, 8 (not shown). Arrangements of conveyers are described for moving material to and from stockpiles. Fig. 14 illustrates an arrangement of winches for use with the apparatus described above. Any one or any combination of drums 304, 3041, 305, 3051 may be driven by a motor M through epicyclic gear ing provided with brake drums 310, 3101, 311, 3111.
