PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus and image forming apparatus, capable of accurately detecting a ground color, even when a document is inclined. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus includes: a reading means for reading a document to produce image data; an tilt detection means for detecting a tilt of the document (S104); a tilt correcting means for correcting the tilt of an image that the image data represent, on the basis of the tilt detected by the tilt detection means (S105); a round color detection means for detecting the ground color of the document on the image of which the tilt has been corrected by the tilt correcting means (S106); and a ground color correcting means (S107) for correcting the ground color of at least either the image before the tilt correction or the image after the tilt correction on the basis of the ground color detected by the ground color detection means.
