High-purity maleic anhydride is derived from a crude mixture as produced by oxidation of benzene or C4 hydrocarbons and containing the maleic anhydride to be recovered. The process is carried out in at least two stages in the first of which the maleic acid in the mixture is decomposed by heat into maleic anhydride and water and a forerun is separated, and in the second of which maleic anhydride is continuously distilled from the sump product obtained from the first step. |
