<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively achieve a steering column device not only capable of preventing a situation where an inner column 10a and an outer column 11a are carelessly separated during mounting to a vehicle but also capable of absorbing impact energy when secondary collision occurs and controlling energy absorbing characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: An engagement recess 36 constituted of a movement allowing part 37 in a rear half side portion and an energy absorbing part 38 in a front half side portion is formed in a section from a portion nearer to a front end of the outer peripheral face of the inner column 10a to an intermediate portion. The depth dimension of the movement allowing part 37 is made constant over the forward/backward direction, and the depth dimension of the energy absorbing part 38 is set smaller toward the forward direction. An upper end of an energy absorbing plate 40 also serving as a stopper and fixed to the front end of the outer column 11a is made to enter inside of the engagement recess 36 with the configuration.
