<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small optical dispersion compensation element which can be also installed in in-line manner in an optical fiber transmission path of a high density wavelength multiplex communication system and compensates a plurality of wavelength channels with different channel bandwidth at the same time and with which the residual difference of dispersion compensation of each of the wavelength channels can be reduced and to provide a design method for the light dispersion compensation element. <P>SOLUTION: A group delay spectrum of an optical light dispersion compensation element is divided into a plurality of dispersion compensation wavelength channel bandwidth A, B having group delay time intended for dispersion compensation within the range of a certain channel bandwidth at each of the plurality of wavelength channels intended for transmission of light signals.
