<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detecting device of an image carrier surface state capable of improving a moving distance of a sensor per unit time by performing a continuous reciprocation without changing the rotating direction of a driving system when detecting the state of an image carrier surface by reciprocating a detecting means in the axial direction of the image carrier. <P>SOLUTION: This detecting device of the image carrier surface state includes: an endless image carrier 1 (Y, M, C, and K) moving on the surface by rotating; detecting means 58 (Y, M, C, and K) detecting the surface state of the image carrier; and moving means 56 (Y, M, C, and K) supporting the detecting mans and reciprocating the detecting means in an image carrier axial direction (a) that orthogonally crosses with the surface moving direction of the image carrier. The moving means includes: spiral guide parts 80 and 81 (Y, M, C, and K) for forward and backward movements extending in the image carrier axial direction; sending members 60 (Y, M, C, and K) where end portions of the spiral guide parts for forward and backward movements are mutually continued; and drive means 41 (Y, M, C, and K) rotatingly actuating the sending members in one direction.
