<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide raw cotton for papermaking that is excellent in dispersibility in water, capable of being packaged in a bale, and capable of maintaining a good dispersibility in water after a long-term storage in a bale package state, and to provide a bale package. <P>SOLUTION: The raw cotton for papermaking includes crimped staple fibers and simultaneously satisfies the following conditions (1)-(5): (1) a crimp number is 1.0-6.0/25 mm; (2) a crimp degree is 1.0-6.0%; (3) a friction coefficient between fibers when dried is 0.25-0.50, (4) a friction coefficient between fibers when wet is 0.25 or less, and (5) a fiber length is 5-15 mm.
