The present invention relates to a technology for separating a background and an object existed on the background in an image. An image separating device using rank information, and a method thereof according to the present invention analyze a main component in an input image using a robust principal component analysis (RPCA), find an optimal solution of a Lagrangian function using an augmented lagrange multiplier method (ALMM), and set a regularization parameter used in the Lagrangian function using rank information of the input image in a method for separating an object and a background. Thereby the device and the method of the present invention provide an image separation device using rank information which more rapidly and strongly separates a background and an object.
