<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electro-optical modulator capable of suppressing characteristic fluctuation due to suppression of a power consumption increase, miniaturization of the size and process variation, and avoiding the complication of a system configuration. <P>SOLUTION: A polarizing direction of signal light output from a signal light source 1011 is adjusted by a signal light source-side polarizing direction adjusting part 1021, and a modulation part 1031 gives a modulation to the signal light by an EO effect. Reference light is output from a reference light source 1041 and the polarizing direction thereof is adjusted in the same direction as that of the signal light by a reference light source-side polarizing direction adjusting part 1022.
