PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel anticancer agent which is difficult to be released from a cancer cell and suitable for topical treatment against a cancer cell. SOLUTION: The anticancer agent comprises a rotaxane compound represented by chemical formula (I) as an effective ingredient. The rotaxane compound is composed of two parts including a rod-like part having relatively large molecules bonded at both ends thereof and a circular part (crown ether) through which the rod-like part is pierced. The relatively large molecules are bonded to both ends of the rod-shaped part, and the molecules act as a stopper, so that the circular part cannot release from the rod-shaped part. The two parts are bonded not through covalent bond. Therefore, the shape of the molecules readily changes, and the incorporation thereof through a receptor is relatively difficult, however, introduction thereof into a cancer cell can suppress proliferation of the cancer cell.
