A magnetometer comprising an isotropic resonant cavity bounded by two semi-transparent mirrors (14, 16) aligned along an optical path, containing a laser medium and equipped with means (18, 20, 21) for exciting laser emission lines in the medium in a single mode with a gain of more than 100 per passage. A transducer (22) receives the laser beam through one of the mirrors and supplies an electrical signal containing the beat frequency between the sigma <+> and sigma <-> emissions, the mirrors having a high enough transmission coefficient for the laser medium to be far from saturation. <IMAGE>
