A method and an apparatus for illumination normalization of a face image are provided to increase the recognition ration of a face recognition system by removing a partial shadow with the illumination. An upper bit plane adopting a bit plane as many as the number designated in a bit plane obtained from a pixel value of a facial image is obtained(S410). A blurring mask that expresses the shadow discontinuity by the lighting of the facial image is determined by using the upper bit plane(S420). A lighting-estimated image is outputted by performing the blurring filtering of the blurring mask to the facial image(S430), and the lighting-normalized image in which the illumination is removed from the facial image is obtained by using only the illumination estimation image and the facial image(S440).
