PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a versatile, low-cost position detector. SOLUTION: The detector includes a plurality of coils L1 to L4 which are excited by an AC signal. The coils L1 to L4 are individually mounted to independent magnetic cores C1 to C4 respectively, and each set of the coil and the magnetic core is physically separated from the other sets. Each set of the coil and the magnetic core is fixed onto a fixing member in a predetermined relative position. A magnetic responsive member RP is arranged to be relatively displaced to the coil section. The relative position of the magnetic responsive member to the coil section changes according to a position of a detection object. An impedance of each of the coils L1 to L4 changes according to this relative position to obtain position detection data of the detection object from an output voltage corresponding to the impedance of each of the coils L1 to L4.
