PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a defect of a conventional pen input system for mathematical expression. SOLUTION: In an online recognition method for handwritten mathematical expression, mathematical expression recognition of the whole handwritten mathematical expression is carried out by performing a step to select a portion of handwritten mathematical expression and perform mathematical expression recognition of the portion one time or a plurality of times; selecting the above whole handwritten mathematical expression; and using the recognition result of the already determined one or more portions of handwritten mathematical expressions. Recognition of mathematical expression is to search a mathematical expression candidate of high likelihood using a stochastic creating model, and recognition of mathematical expression of the whole handwritten mathematical expression is performed by narrowing a search coverage by using a recognition result of the portion of the already determined handwritten mathematical expression. Stochastic context-free grammar based on a stroke unit is used for the above model. The above search is carried out using a CYK algorithm. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
