The mooring system comprises a locking mechanism for securing and releasing ropes from large ships in port. The locking mechanism comprises a fairlead (a) on a frame with a rotatable, lockable wheel (b) having a wide rim and held by two supports (c) which may be spread at their bases to allow the rim to pass. A rope eye (e) on the end of a mooring rope enters the fairlead and is placed around the axis of the locked wheel, around its supports and rests in a v-shape section cut into the wheel's rim. Under tension, the rope lies slightly above the centre of the wheel's axis causing only a small turning force which is essential for easy releasing and reducing the load applied to a locking mechanism. Wheel locking is achieved by inserting less than a half disc shape, being part of an attached locking bar, into a recess of the same shape cut in the wheel's rim. The wheel remains unlocked until the locking bar is secured. |
