PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the lift-up of a middle plate at an arbitrary timing when a driving means of a paper feed roller and a cam member are at the initial position in a paper feed mechanism having a detection means which lowers the paper feed roller by the rotational control of the cam member synchronized with a driving means for driving the paper feed roller, and detects the upper surface height of the sheet material according to the abutting position of the paper feed roller on the sheet material. SOLUTION: A paper feed mechanism has a detection means which lowers a paper feed roller by the rotational control of a cam member synchronized with a driving means for driving the paper feed roller, and detects the upper surface height of the sheet material according to the abutting position of the paper feed roller on the sheet material, and has a releasing means for releasing the holding of the paper feed roller at the initial position by the cam member by rotating the cam member without synchronization with the driving means.
