The energy source (1) directs an energetic beam of e.g. laser radiation or plasma at the component (3, 120, 130, 155) surface (8), in order to cause a controlled degree of melting. A sensor (2) measures the spacing between the source (1) and the surface (8) during operation. In addition or alternatively, it determines the material of the surface being treated. The measurement and/or determination are evaluated. From the results, the controller (7) regulates the power (P) of the source. The sensor is magnetic or optical. The energetic beam source is a welding tool. It is a laser or a plasma generator and the sensor is fastened to it. The sensor can only determine the material at the surface, where it is irradiated by the energetic beam. The sensor measures only the spacing between source and surface; alternatively it determines both the spacing and the surface material. In use, all measurements are taken without contact. The power employed at the source, is controlled from the spacing and/or the material detected. The power is only raised from zero when the beam is aimed at the component. It is only raised when a predetermined spacing is measured between source and surface. The predetermined spacing is defined by a maximum and a minimum value. The sensor is a radar-, magnetic- or optical device. An independent claim is included for the corresponding method. |
