PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for cracking heavy hydrocarbon oil, capable of producing light hydrocarbon oil from the heavy hydrocarbon oil efficiently without using high pressure hydrogen gas, while adopting a catalyst having a good activity. SOLUTION: This method for cracking the heavy hydrocarbon oil is characterized in that the method is to produce the light hydrocarbon oil efficiently by bringing the heavy hydrocarbon oil in contact with the catalyst in the presence of water and the catalyst contains the element of cerium.
