PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for readily producing an ionic liquid in a high yield while efficiently removing odor components produced. SOLUTION: The method for producing the ionic liquid comprises: a first step of bringing an OH type anion exchange resin into contact with an aqueous solution of organic acid; a second step of bringing the anion exchange resin carrying an organic acid anion obtained in the first step into contact with an aqueous solution containing a salt represented by formula (1) [wherein Z is a phosphorus atom or nitrogen atom; R<SP>1</SP>-R<SP>4</SP>are each independently 1-12C cyclic, linear or branched alkyl group; and X is a halogen atom]; and a third step of deodorizing the ionic liquid by bringing the ionic liquid obtained in the second step into contact with a porous body having an organic matter adsorbing ability.
