A method of making a security element (1) for a data carrier where a substrate (2) is overlaid on a visible layer (3). An image outlining member (4) or a tool head (8) is positioned on said visible layer (3) and energy is applied to the image outlining member (4) or tool head (8) to melt the visible layer and form an outline of an image. Material not required to form the image is removed, so providing the image on the substrate (2).
