A fuel system comprising a fluid blender in fluid communication with a source of a first fuel composition and a source of a second fuel composition via at least one inlet, the blender being operable to receive at least the first fuel composition and/or second fuel composition via the at least one inlet, and output a resultant fuel composition comprising the received fuel compositions via at least one outlet, and the at least one outlet being in fluid communication with an engine fuel injection device; a regulator for controlling a percentage of the first and second fuel composition which are blended together; and a control unit, the regulator being responsive to a signal from the control unit which defines the percentage of the first and second fuel composition to be blended together, andthe control unit comprises a blending ratio calculator configured to calculate a required resultant fuel composition as a function of desired soot emission index, the desired soot emission index determined by a soot requirement generator which is operable to communicate a desired value of soot emission index to the blending ratio calculator.
