PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical transmission device and an optical transmission method that are capable of restraining increase in the amount of transmission data on an optical transmission path caused by inserting a training sequence which is a known signal to estimate a wavelength dispersion characteristic of the optical transmission path into communication data.SOLUTION: A transmitting unit includes a training sequence inserting unit (15) that inserts a training sequence which is a known signal to estimate a wavelength distribution characteristic of an optical transmission path into communication data in advance at a transmission time. A receiving unit includes: a dispersion compensating unit (23) that compensates wavelength dispersion of the communication data by estimating the wavelength dispersion characteristic of the optical transmission path from waveform distortion of the training sequence when receiving the communication data; and a wavelength dispersion characteristic notifying unit (25) that notifies the training sequence inserting unit of the wavelength dispersion characteristic of the optical transmission path estimated by the dispersion compensating unit. The training sequence inserting unit variably sets an insertion frequency of the training sequence to the communication data according to the wavelength dispersion characteristic of the optical transmission path reported by the wavelength dispersion characteristic notifying unit.
