PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a two-photon-absorbing compound which has excellent solubility in water and which absorbs two photons in the near-infrared wavelength region and is excited to emit red fluorescence.SOLUTION: The compound is represented by formula (1) where Xand Xmay be the same or different and each represent formula (2) (where Rrepresents a C1-3 alkyl group, Zrepresents an anion counter to the pyridinium cation, and the wavy line indicates a covalent bond to the Y); and Y represents a fused polycyclic group made up of 2-4 rings).
