According to the present invention, a production method for an episulfide compound that is for an optical material includes: a step for chlorinating glycerin and obtaining dichloropropanol; a step for epoxidating the dichloropropanol and obtaining epichlorohydrin; a step for reacting the epichlorohydrin with a sulfurizing agent and obtaining, by way of a thiol compound, a bis-chlorohydrin disulfide compound; a step for epoxidating the bis-chlorohydrin disulfide compound under basic conditions and obtaining an epoxy compound; and a step for reacting the epoxy compound with a sulfurizing agent and obtaining an episulfide compound represented by general formula (1).
