The present invention relates to a composition for treating or preventing pigmentary disorders such as chloasma or the like by controlling pleiotrophin or a composition for skin whitening. In addition, the present invention relates to a method for treating pigmentary disorders such as chloasma or the like by administering or applying an effective amount of a pleiotrophin protein to skin which needs to improve pigmentary disorders such as chloasma or the like. A composition of the present invention can be useful in improving pigmentary disorders such as chloasma or the like by controlling pleiotrophin. Moreover, a composition containing pleiotrophin as an active ingredient of the present invention has an excellent skin whitening effect.
