PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable an acquisition of a contrast component in a direction different from a reading direction even when not ensuring a volume of a line memory corresponding to a size of a subject region in evaluation of a contrast in the direction different from the reading direction.SOLUTION: An imaging device comprises: an image pickup element 116 that receives subject image light and sequentially read an image signal; detection means 105 for detecting a subject region on the basis of the photographed image signal; focus adjustment means 113 for adjusting a focus on the basis of the detected image signal within the subject region; storage means 107 for thinning processing as to at least one part of the image signal included within the subject region in a reading direction and sequentially storing the image signal subjected to the thinning processing; and first computation means 108 for sequentially performing filter processing in a direction different from the reading direction as to the stored image signal and calculating a focus signal in the direction different from the reading direction. The storage means 107 is configured so that the larger the size of the subject region is, the larger a thinning rate of the image signal in the reading direction is made.
