An aircraft 102 comprises an avionics system 108 configured to perform one or more functions, and an interface module 110 storing test criteria for each function, receiving from a remote entity 104 (e.g. a tablet computer, a PC, a smartphone, or another hand-held portable communications device) a request for the avionics system to perform a function, testing the function against corresponding stored criteria, and outputting the request to the avionics system only if all the test criteria are satisfied. The interface module 110 may establish a communications link 120 with the remote entity upon acquiring connection criteria in a handshake process, send requests from the remote device to the interface module and stream data from the avionics system to be displayed by the remote device for example on a touchscreen 118. The connection criteria of the communications link may comprise a periodic health check, whose failure can result in breaking the link. Use of the interface module helps to connect non certified devices to the aircrafts avionics systems while maintaining their integrity by preventing them from operating outside their qualifications. |
