The present invention relates to an imaging apparatus comprising: an imaging element to sequentially read an image signal in a horizontal direction or a vertical direction by receiving light on a subject; a detecting unit to detect a subject area; a focus adjusting unit to perform focus adjustment; a storing unit to decimate and to sequentially store the decimated image signal; and a calculating unit to calculate a focus signal in a direction different from the read direction. The storing unit increases a decimation rate of the image signal in the read direction when the subject area is a second size larger than a first size more than the first size. |
