According to the present invention, a method for preparing an artificial graphite negative electrode material for a rechargeable lithium battery comprises the steps of: mixing coal-based raw materials and petroleum-based raw materials, and manufacturing a mixed raw material; coking the mixed raw material through a first heat treatment; carbonizing the mixed raw material through a second heat treatment and obtaining a carbide; and graphitizing the powder through a third heat treatment and obtaining a graphitized material.
