Disclosed are a method for detecting a small target in an infrared image, and an apparatus thereof. The method for detecting a small target in an infrared image comprises the steps of: detecting a small target candidate region from an infrared image by using a difference of Gaussian (DoG) filter; generating a saliency map by using residual spectrum of the infrared image; and applying the saliency map to the detected small target candidate region to detect a small target candidate.
