This invention is a sheet-shaped sealing material that comprises one or more sealing-resin layers and is characterized in that (each of) said sealing-resin layer(s) satisfies the following conditions: (a) a sealing resin constitutes at least 50% of the total mass of the sealing-resin layer in question; (b) the thickness (T1) of the sealing-resin layer is between 0.1 and 100 µm, inclusive; (c) the water-vapor transmission rate (A1) of the sealing-resin layer at said thickness (T1) and at a temperature of 40°C and a relative humidity of 90% is between 0.1 and 5000 g/m2/day, inclusive; and (d) A1 and T1 satisfy relation (I). (I) A1×(T1)2 < 10,000 This invention provides the following: a sheet-shaped sealing material that exhibits excellent sealing performance; a sealing sheet that has both a sealing-material layer comprising said sheet-shaped sealing material and a gas-barrier layer; an electronic-device seal obtained using said sheet-shaped sealing material or sealing sheet as a sealing material; and an organic electroluminescent element that has a sealing-material layer that exhibits excellent sealing performance.
