Acrylonitrile containing acetylene polymers (such as divinylacetylene and ethynylbutadiene) is purified by effecting selective catalytic hydrogenation of said polymers with a Raney metal or noble metal at temperature from 0 DEG to 50 DEG C. in an atmosphere of hydrogen under a pressure of from 1 to 20 atmospheres and separating pure acrylonitrile from the hydrogenation product by fractional distillation. The catalyst may comprise Raney nickel or cobalt suspended in the nitrile to be treated, or platinum or palladium supported upon an inert stationary carrier in a catalysis chamber. Specification 557,436, [Group IV], is referred to. |
