Processing a current block of pixels of an image using a palette coding mode in which a current palette 2003 is predicted from a palette predictor 2001. The current colour palette comprises a set of colour values associated to palette indices, and the palette coding mode involves predicting the pixels of a block by a set of palette indices. Preferably the palette predictor may be a previously processed predictor, such as that associated to the previous block, or an adjacent processed block. Alternatively, the palette predictor is derived from the values of previously processed pixels adjacent to the current block. The current palette may be an ordered table of colour values, with each entry being predicted from the previous entry in the palette. The palette may be derived from the palette predictor plus a residual corresponding to the difference between the current and predictor palette entries. In the embodiment videos are encoded according to HEVC RExt range extension and the palette indices representing the pixels are run length encoded. |
