Disclosed is a method for transmitting a message from a sender computer (102) through a messaging server (106) to a handset (104). The method comprises the messaging server (106) receives a message to be sent to the handset (104) and a handset identifier associated with the handset (104) from the sender computer (102). The handset identifier is a public network address. The server (106) determines whether the handset (104) is registered with the messaging server (106) in response to receiving the message from the sender computer (102). The server (106) facilitates the registration of the handset (104) by sending a notification to the handset (104) requesting registration using the public network address of the handset identifier from the messaging server (106); receiving a handset encryption key associated with the handset identifier from the handset (104); and storing the handset encryption key against the handset identifier at the messaging server (106). The server (106) encrypts the message received from the sender computer (102) using the handset encryption key and sending the encrypted message to the handset (104). |
