An adjustable hanger for an item has a body with at least one slot adapted to be fixedly engaged by a support that Is attached to a surface. A projection extends from the body and is adapted to support the item. Before the body is fixedly engaged by the support the body slot can move with respect to the support so as to position the projection in. a desirable location. The support is typically a fastener having a head and is screwed through the slot and into the surface and where the fastener head has a footprint that is greater than the width of the slot. Thus when it is screwed into the surface it locks the body in relative position to the surface, typically a wall
