SURGICAL STAPLER Abstract A surgical fastener applying apparatus (10) comprising a cartridge section (12) having a cartridge containing a plurality of fasteners and an anvil section (14) having an 5 anvil for receiving the fasteners when advanced from the cartridge. The cartridge and anvil sections (12, 14) clamp tissue therebetween. A cam member (38) is slidable within the cartridge section (12) to fire the fasteners, and is movable from a first position defining a first distance (X) from the anvil (14) to a second position defining a second different distance (Y) from the anvil (14).
