[Also in Division E2] An article of furniture inincludes a metal drawer unit consisting of one or more drawers located in a housing 21 mounted on a frame 1 provided with two slideways 3 extending across the frame and disposed in spaced parallel relation, each slideway having an opening 5 intermediate the ends thereof to permit the introduction into the slideway for location at or adjacent to an end thereof of a slider 6 secured to an element such as a leg 7 or castor on which the article is to stand, locking means 19 operable to lock the drawer or drawers of the unit in the closed position thereof, a cover 31 fixed above the housing and a lock 29 carried by the cover and co-operating with the locking means to effect actuation thereof. The or each drawer unit incorporates parallel slideways 16 having rollers 18 on which the or each drawer runs and the locking means is a sliding bolt which moves in a vertical slideway 20 formed on the inner face of one side of the housing 21, the bolt being provided at its upper end with a tongue 22 the free end of which is bent at right angles to the remainder of the bolt and at its bottom end with a second tongue 24 which is of L-shape. The tongue 24 can engage the tongue 22 of a bolt 19 of another drawer unit. Intermediate the ends of the bolt is a member 27 which co-operates in locking position with a protruding portion 28 provided on the drawer. When the bolt is raised the member 27 is raised out of the path of the portion 28. The lock in the cover comprises an angle member 30 having pivots at each end rotatable in bearings 32 and connected to a lock cylinder. The angle member co-operates with the tongue 22 of the or the top-most drawer unit; in the locking position the tongue 22 rests on a horizontal flange 34 of the member 30 and the member 30 is turned through a right angle so that the flange raises all the bolts 19. A notch is provided in one flange of the member 30 to facilitate its engagement with the tongue of the bolt. The frame 1 consists of two channel section members 2 and the slideways 3 which join the members 2 together. When legs 7 are used each consists of two channel section members welded together and their upper ends are welded to the slider 6 which consists of a plate 8 with flanges 9 at opposite edges. When in the correct position in the slideways the legs are bolted in position. When drawer units and covers are used for a desk the desk top rests on the covers. |
