Hydrocarbon liquid polymers of molecular weight 800 to 2,000 are made by polymerizing an ethylene-containing gas at a temperature below 70 DEG C. in the presence of a halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon diluent, and a catalyst consisting of a halide of a transition metal, an aluminium alkyl compound of the formula A1RnX3-n, where n represents an integer of at least 1, and a minor amount of a lower C1-C8 alcohol. The ethylene-containing gas may include various amounts of propylene and butene-1. Specified alcohols are methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, n-propanol, isobutanol, n-butanol, sec-butanol, and tertiary butanol. Transition metal halides mentioned are TiC14, ZrC14, VC14, and TiC13. The organoaluminium compound may be aluminium diethyl chloride, aluminium ethyl dichloride, or mixtures thereof. The preferred diluents are dichlorobenzene, and monochlorobenzene. The liquid polymers are used as lubricants per se, or they may be hydrogenated. |
