An umbrella frame 24 comprises a notch 25, moulded plastic ribs 26 pivoted at one end to the notch, a runner 28, and moulded plastic stretchers 29 pivoted at one end to the runner and, at the other end, provided with a moulded bearing 42 making a snap-fit pivotal connection with an interior bearing surface 41 in a lap 38 intermediate the ends of a rib and having an opening 39 with a restricted neck 45 through which the bearing is pushed. The pivotal connections of the ribs and stretchers to the notch and runner, respectively, are by a pin or like formation snap-fitted into a bearing through a restricted neck. In a modification, shown in Fig. 8, the lap is replaced by a projection 68 and spherical member 67 which has an external bearing surface and is snapfitted between semi-spherical bearing surfaces on resilient arms at the outer end of each stretcher. The connections of the ribs and stretchers to the notch and runner are similarly formed. A modification of the projection from the rib is shown in Fig. 11 and, as shown in Fig. 13, upper and lower integral spiders 91, 92 are moulded with thinned selfhinges 99, 100. The ribs may be in two sections as shown in Fig. 2 and the outer ends may be curved downwards. The frame members are preferably moulded in polypropylene, with talc filler, but nylon, styrene, hard rubbers, acrylic and other resins, or combinations thereof, may be used to provide rigidity in the bodies of the ribs and stretchers and resiliency in the snap-fitting parts. |
