摘要 The invention relates to methods for diagnosing multiple sclerosis with miRNA markers. Diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) can be challenging in patients with atypical presentations and during a first neurological deficit possibly related to inflammatory demyelination. Towards the identification of biomarkers for diagnosis of MS, a comprehensive analysis of miRNA expression patterns was obtained. Significantly deregulated miRNAs were identified, which have previously not been related to MS according to the microRNA disease database. These miRNAs could potentially serve as future diagnostic biomarkers for MS and help in diagnosis, monitoring disease activity, and evaluation of treatment responses in patients with MS.

A method for diagnosing multiple sclerosis, predicting risk of developing multiple sclerosis, or predicting an out-come of multiple sclerosis in a patient suffering from or at risk of developing multiple sclerosis, said method comprising the steps of: a) determining in a sample from said patient, the expression level of at least one miRNA selected from the group consisting of hsa-miR-16-2-3p, hsa-miR-22-5p, hsa-miR-125b-5p, hsa-miR-629-5p, hsa-miR-100-5p, hsa-miR-20a-5p, hsa-miR-151a-3p, and hsa-miR-7-1-3p. b) comparing the pattern of expression level(s) determined in step a) with one or several reference pattern(s) of expression levels; and c) diagnosing multiple sclerosis, predicting a risk of developing multiple sclerosis, or predicting an outcome of multiple sclerosis from the outcome of the comparison in step b).
