Polymers which cross-link and harden on exposure to light are image-wise exposed and then subjected to uniform softening conditions whereby the less exposed areas become softer and more adhesive than the more exposed areas and which do not cause removal of polymer from the layer, applying to the layer before, during or after subjecting to softening conditions pigment particles and after subjecting to softening conditions, removing the particles which have not adhered to the layer to leave an image. Specified softening conditions are (i) heating and (ii) applying an organic liquid which is not a solvent for the polymer but merely softens it e.g. carbon tetra chloride, methyl isobutyl pentone or 4- methoxybutyl acetate. Specified polymers are polyvinyl cinnamate polytetramethylene cinnamylidenemalonate or a polyester derived from a (2-propenylidene) malonic acid and a glycol with 2 to 12 carbon atoms or a dihydric phenol containing 6 to 12 carbon atoms. If a ceramic support and a vitrifiable pigment e.g. carbon black is used, the pigment may be fixed so as to remove the polymer and leave an enamel. Alternatively, Multi-colour images may be produced by obtaining a pigment image as above, coating the pigment image layer with a light-sensitive polymer to obtain a further pigment image, recoating and expiring to obtain a third pigment image and then firing to remove the polymer from the three layers and to leave a multi-coloured image. Lithographic plates may be produced by using a hydrophobic polymer and a hydrophilic pigment such as silica or baryta. The method may also be used to produce continuous tone images.
