PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve an 8-forward speed automatic transmission having superior assemblability in which direct coupling gears can be set to 6-speed gears and gear steps between shift stages can be distributed appropriately.SOLUTION: An automatic transmission includes: an input shaft 12; an output gear 13 located coaxially with the input shaft and coupled to a differential mechanism; double pinion type first and second planetary gear sets PG1 and PG2; single pinion type third and fourth planetary gear sets PG3 and PG4; first to third clutches CL1 to CL3 for disengaging and engaging between predetermined rotary elements of the gear sets PG1 to PG4; and first and second brakes BR1 and BR2 for disengaging and engaging the predetermined rotary elements of the gear sets PG1 to PG4 and a transmission case 11. When the first to third clutches CL1 to CL3 are engaged and the first and second brakes BR1 and BR2 are released, a 6-speed gear whose reduction gear ratio is 1 is formed, and the first and second brakes BR1 and BR2 are located at an end on a side of an opening 11a of the transmission case 11. |
