<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To apply brakes when fully closing or fully opening a sliding door, to lightly move the sliding door when moving it in an opposite direction, and to reduce a manufacturing cost by a simple configuration. <P>SOLUTION: A brake device for a sliding door comprises: brake plates 2 attached to the sliding door; and a brake body 3 which includes a base body 4 and a slide body 5 having a part separated in a sliding door width direction on the side of the base body 4 and slidable to the base body 4, and is attached to an upper frame. Slide parts 6A to be slid with inner surfaces 2A of the brake plates 2 are formed on the slide body 5, inclined surfaces 6B to approach the base body 4 as approaching an outer side in the sliding door width direction are formed on an end face on the side of the base body 4 of the slide body 5, and inclined surfaces 4B to be abutted to the inclined surfaces 6B are formed on an end face on the side of the slide body 5 of the base body 4. When fully closing or fully opening the sliding door, the slide body 5 is held by the brake plates 2 and moved together with the sliding door, and the inclined surfaces 6B are abutted and stopped by the inclined surfaces 4B.
