PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the document area precisely even in case of a document having a background of deep color. SOLUTION: A print division image generating means 34 generates a plurality of print division image data based on the outputs from a plurality of image sensors 16 having different spectral characteristics. A comparing means 35 compares the pixel value of each print division image data with a predetermined threshold value and makes a decision whether each pixel is a white pixel or a black pixel. Base on the decision results, an estimated document area determining means 36 determines the estimated document area of each print division image data.
